Opera in a Box – The Pirates of Penzance
Launched to acclaim in 2016, Opera in a Box merges opera’s traditional elements with contemporary twists, offering intimate and electrifying performances. Touring across the South West this summer, the company presents its take on Gilbert & Sullivan’s ever-popular The Pirates of Penzance, performing in Dorset for one night only as part of the summer programme by local charity Artsreach.
“Superb singing, great acting… a triumph in every sense of the word!”
Audience Feedback
This much-loved comic opera follows Frederic, a young apprentice mistakenly bound to a band of tender-hearted pirates, as he navigates duty, love and cowardly policemen. Celebrated for its sparkling score and razor-sharp wordplay, the operetta delights in its own absurdity while delivering one memorable tune after another.
As a touring company, Opera in a Box aims to bring the opera genre to as wide an audience as possible, breaking down preconceptions about the genre with fresh and exciting productions. The company is focused on bringing together young and talented individuals to create innovative and gripping theatre, and productions regularly feature singers who have also performed with companies including Bath Opera, Bristol Opera and Welsh National Youth Opera, and in venues from The Theatre Royal, Bath to Glyndebourne.
Blending opera’s traditional elements with contemporary twists, a talented ensemble of eight singers and musicians will bring this lively tale to life with wit and charm in an intimate, electrifying performance. See them live at Lytchett Matravers Village Hall on Saturday 4 July at 7:30pm. Further information and tickets are available online at www.artsreach.co.uk
