Dorset Youth Jazz Orchestra (DYJO) is an intermediate to advanced youth jazz orchestra led by renowned local jazz musician Terry Quinney. The group rehearses monthly and enjoys regular performances with stars of the UK jazz scene such as Mark Nightingale, Emma Rawicz and Eddie Gripper.

DYJO is aimed at young musicians who have progressed well beyond the beginner stages. They should be able to play their instrument confidently and be able to sight-read written notation. For those musicians who are working through grades, we would suggest they are of approximately Grade 4 standard and above, but this is only a guide.

DYJO applicants are usually invited to attend one rehearsal as a ‘taster’ session (at no cost). This helps us to check that they are able to access the band’s music and therefore participate fully in rehearsals and performances. It also gives the young person an opportunity to see if they like DYJO before committing to membership.
