Singing in the Rain!

Tue 16 June 2026

Three schools from Dorset attended the 2026 Special Schools’ Singing Picnic this year. After a last-minute change of venue due to the dubious weather forecast, this year’s singing picnic was as enjoyable as ever with a packed out Charminster Community Hall. The students and staff had a wonderful time singing together. Each school prepared the same medley of playground songs which we were able to sing with each other, in addition to learning some new warmups and action songs. The enthusiasm was infectious; everyone was taking part and able to express themselves. We then enjoyed a picnic together sitting in groups, some meeting up with old friends who had moved schools in the past few years and some making connections for the first time. Parachute games and a mass game of Simon Says capped off a very enjoyable time, with all schools commenting on how wonderful it was to be a part of such a special event.

“The best atmosphere… everyone was singing. I just felt like I was right in it. It was really good!” – Finlay – Westfield Arts College

“The event demonstrated that the real value of activities like this extends far beyond music. It promotes community, belonging, confidence, social development, and positive relationships. These are experiences that can have a lasting impact on our pupils and are often difficult to replicate within the normal school environment.” – Miguel Cruz (Music Teacher – The Harbour School)
