What are Elastic Bands?

Elastic Bands are fun and friendly music groups for children who are new to learning a musical instrument.

Children have the chance to make music with others, explore new ideas and create music together in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Sessions are led by Dorset Music Service musicians who help everyone take part and enjoy making music as a group.

 Who can join?

Elastic Bands are for children in Key Stage 2 (Years 3, 4, 5 and 6). Children are welcome to join if they:

  • are already learning a musical instrument
  • can ideally play at least four notes, open strings or simple drum patterns

These groups work best for children who are already learning an instrument through regular lessons as they are not designed to replace individual tuition. Instead, they provide a fun and supportive way for children to build confidence and develop new skills through making music with others.

Where and when do sessions take place?

Sessions currently take place at Archbishop Wake Primary School (DT11 8SW) in Blandford on Mondays in term-time. Sessions run from 3.45pm to 4.45pm. We understand that some children travel from other schools to attend, so they are welcome to join the sessions whenever they arrive.

What happens at a session?

 At each session, children:

  • take part in fun music games
  • work together as a group to create music

The sessions are welcoming and enjoyable for all abilities, with opportunities to try new things and make music with others. Sessions are shaped by the children’s ideas and interests, giving everyone the chance to create music together.

Parents and carers are asked not to stay during sessions, as this helps children take part independently and enjoy the experience with the group.

Children should bring their instrument to the session or come ready to sing. Percussion instruments are provided for children who play drum kit or percussion.

Children do not need to read music or be experts on their instrument. Every child is given a musical part that matches their experience and ability. They learn and play short musical phrases and melodies using a small number of notes. These are then put together to create a piece of music as a group.

Children are supported by staff who hold enhanced DBS checks, receive regular safeguarding training and are trained to work inclusively with children. They provide support throughout the activities, helping children take part with confidence.

Guest musicians sometimes join the group to offer additional support and inspiration.

Individual instrument tuition is not provided as part of Elastic Band sessions.

How much does it cost?

 The cost is:

  • £30 per term for 8 sessions
  • £15 for the Autumn Term for 4 sessions

Children who receive Targeted Free School Meals can get a 50% reduction on the cost.
